Valentine’s Day at Burro, Riccall

By Kat

I was lucky enough to spend a romantic Valentine’s evening in a cosy converted windmill nestled in the quirky North Yorkshire village named Riccall. As a firm believer in the indulgence that is Italian cuisine and no stranger to the necessity of parmesan in one’s life, I imagined we were in for a luxurious evening.

Luckily, I was right.

We were greeted enthusiastically by the staff who I noted had made an effort to dress for the occasion. Our table was tucked towards the middle wall of the circular space but we still had a wonderful view of the windows and other diners. The atmosphere was suitably bustling for a packed Valentines evening. Upon recommendation, I quickly made the decision to sample the special cocktail of the evening. The ‘York Rose’ was a delightful blend of rhubarb and quince gin, pink grapefruit soda and fresh lemon… thoughtfully served with a miniature rose to decorate which I thoroughly appreciated. I also later tried the limoncello spritz which was aptly named.

From there, I ordered the nduja arancini and the piccante pizza. For anyone not so fluent in Italian (as is the case with me), ‘piccante’ means spicy. Fortunately, I am a self-proclaimed spice demon and this was a welcome surprise. My partner ordered a mini burrata pizza for his starter and the braised beef with malloreddus pasta for main course (that’s malloreddus, not malodorous as we first assumed). Everything we ordered was utterly delicious and a testament to the culinary blessing that is Burro restaurant.

We simply couldn’t leave our divine experience without at least checking out the dessert menu. Not to do so is sacrilege, according to popular restaurant etiquette. Our devotion to civility led us blissfully to a tiramisu and a pistachio and white chocolate cheesecake. It was one of those ‘soul leaves the body’ kind of affairs and I am ashamed to say I have dreamed of that heavenly cheesecake ever since.

Overall, a truly unforgettable evening.

We were living la dolce vita in little old Yorkshire! Who would have thought?
